Stink Bugs

What are stink bugs?

Stink bugs are part of the order Hemiptera (true bugs). These unique looking insects were introduced from Asia into the United States in 1998 and first spotted in Pennsylvania. Since their introduction, their populations have spread throughout the eastern and western parts of North America.

Stink bugs are an easily recognizable insect because of the triangular-shaped plate or “shield” on their backs. Their appearance has given them their other common name—“shield bugs.” Named because of small glands located on their thorax that emit an offensive odor, stink bugs are a pest no one wants living in or around their home. Stink bugs are a mottled brown color, and adults are as long as they are wide. Some have patches of copper or metallic color on their heads. Their straight antennae have light bands of color on them, and their front wings have dark bands.

Are stink bugs dangerous?

Stink bugs are a smelly nuisance to have in our yards and homes, but pose no real health problems to people, nor do they cause any structural damage to buildings. However, stink bugs are a major agricultural pest.

These insects use their mouthparts to pierce the “skin” of a plant and suck out the liquid. The damage they cause to fruits, vegetables, and ornamental plants makes them unsellable. Some of their favorite food sources include apples, stone fruits, figs, citrus fruits, tomatoes, and soybeans.

Why do I have a stink bug problem?

The biggest reason homeowners have problems with stink bugs is because they use our homes as overwintering sites. When the weather cools in the late fall, stink bugs gather in large numbers on the warm sunny sides of houses and other buildings. As they move up the exterior walls, they find their way inside through any opening they can find, including gaps around windows, vents, openings in exterior walls, and holes along the roofline.

Where will I find stink bugs?

During the spring, summer, and early fall stink bugs live happily outside feeding and breeding. Adult stink bugs spend their winter inside warm temperature-controlled buildings.

Some of their favorite indoor hiding spots include attics, wall voids, and spaces behind baseboards and window molding.

  • Seal all entry points.
  • Caulk any cracks in the foundation and exterior walls.
  • Repair holes along the roofline and replace missing or damaged roof shingles.
  • Place weatherstripping around windows and doors.
  • Place mesh covers over vents leading into your home.
  • Plant all vegetable and fruit gardens a distance away from the outside of your home.
  • Insects like stink bugs are attracted to light; replace white outdoor lightbulbs with yellow or LED light bulbs, which are far less attractive to insects.
  • Put into place a proactive stink bug treatment plan from Star City Pest Control to prevent these pests from invading your home in large numbers.
